AI selloff
One of the issues about the AI selloff is circular deals. These are arrangements where chipmakers, hyperscalers and AI startups take stakes in each other while simultaneously committing to buy each other’s GPUs, cloud capacity or services, so capital and revenue are recycled within a tight group rather than coming purely from end‑users. This structure can turbo‑charge growth when AI demand and cheap capital coexist, but it also tightly links their balance sheets and earnings so any shortfall in AI monetisation hits hardware, cloud usage and equity valuations at the same time. As a result, it becomes harder to distinguish genuine, sustainable demand from “round‑tripping‑style” activity, which is exactly what investors are questioning in the current AI selloff.
