Do you know?
GE16 in 2026?
The government highlights that tax revenue is projected to rise to RM343.1 billion in 2026, with individual income tax expected to hit RM49.07 billion (up 9.4% from 2025) and corporate tax reaching RM103.35 billion (up 6.5%). This increase is driven by broadening the tax base, improving governance, and steady wage growth—allowing the government to reduce the fiscal deficit to 3.5% of GDP. Nonetheless, tax revenue is growing slower than the economy overall, with tax-to-GDP ratio projected at only 16% in 2026, relying heavily on Petronas dividends. Critics also argue that broadening the sales tax (SST) base and new carbon taxes effectively increase the tax burden on ordinary citizens without meaningful corporate tax rate hikes.
