Malaysia’s energy industry
Malaysian coal-fired power plants typically use low-rank Indonesian coal.
The Indonesian coal provides 4,200-5,500 kilocalories per kilogramme.
In contrast, Australia’s high-grade coal provides 5,500-6,500 kilocalories per kilogramme.
Indonesian coal is preferred because it’s cheaper at USD30-75 per tonne compared to Australian coal at USD70-125 per tonne.
